The climate of Bangladesh has changed over the last few decades, resulting in considerable adverse impacts, especially on wetland-dominated areas like northeastern and coastal Bangladesh. Impacts of climate change in Bangladesh could be observed in the form of fluctuations in temperature, irregular or excessive rainfall, and an increased number of extreme events, including floods, cyclones, droughts, tidal inundation, and salinity intrusion. Bangladesh has important inland and marine ecosystems with approximately 260 indigenous freshwater species and 475 marine species that play a vital role in the country’s economic, ecological, socio-economic, and cultural context. The various benefits people get from ecosystems are commonly called ecosystem services. The ecosystem contributes significantly (ecologically and socio-economically) to the formation of human societies in Bangladesh, but it is now susceptible to threats, and the deterioration can impact the functioning of the ecosystem. A large number of fishing communities maintain their livelihoods on the basis of their water bodies for commercial exploitation of the fishery resources. The livelihood strategy is going to be changed due to the variation of climate and weather conditions.

The trend of climate change and its subsequent impact on ecosystem services, aquatic biodiversity, and human wellbeing in small-scale fisheries in Bangladesh have not been well studied; they are still unexplored and not properly managed. In-depth studies are required to identify the trend of environmental changes and the status of ecosystem services in the mangroves (the Sundarbans), estuaries, and ecologically sensitive wetlands regarding which factors are triggering the changes most, which factors influence one another, whether they are increasing, stable, or decreasing.

The main objective of this is to identify the trend of environmental changes and their impact on ecosystem services, aquatic biodiversity, and human wellbeing.
